2nd Annual Women's Film Series presented by Rehoboth Beach Film Society

January 31st, 2017 - 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is pleased to collaborate with the League of Women Voters®  of Sussex County to present the second annual Women’s Film Series. The focus of this monthly series is to inform, inspire, and empower audiences by exploring a range of women’s issues through the art of film.

The series continues on Tuesday, January 31 at 7:00 pm with a screening of the award-winning documentary, BREAKING THROUGH THE CLOUDS: THE FIRST WOMEN’S NATIONAL AIR DERBY. In August of 1929 Amelia Earhart and 19 other women snapped on goggles and climbed into cockpits to race across the county in the First Women’s National Air Derby. Defying convention with just a compass in their hand and a roadmap to guide them, these fearless aviators challenged stereotypes by proving women could be courageous, intelligent and most of all – great pilots. Wearing breeches by day and ball gowns by night, they flew in the face of anyone who believed women belonged on the ground. BREAKING THROUGH THE CLOUDS won a National Aviation Hall of Fame Combs Gates Award and several Best of Festival awards. Sparky Barnes Sargent of “Vintage Aircraft Magazine” said, “Those of us who treasure aviation history heartily applaud Heather’s efforts and extend gratitude to her for having the inner fortitude and vision to bring this documentary to fruition.” [2010, USA, Runtime: 110 minutes, NR]

A post-film discussion will be moderated by the filmmaker, Heather Taylor. Considered an expert on the subject of The First Women’s National Air Derby, Ms. Taylor’s work has been cited in several publications on women in aviation. She’s spoken on panels at schools, conferences, and museums, most specifically at the National Air & Space Museum. Ms. Taylor had the honor of inducting the twenty women who flew in the First Women’s National Air Derby into the Women in Aviation’s Pioneer Hall of Fame.

The screening will be held 7:00 pm on January 31 at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive, #2, Lewes. Doors open at 6:30 pm.Admission is $9.00 per screening. Tickets can be purchased online at www.rehobothfilm.com or by calling 645-9095.
