BIRDS OF PASSAGE opening at the Cinema Art Theater

March 16th, 2019 - 8:00 am to 8:00 pm

BIRDS OF PASSAGE OPENING AT THE CINEMA ART THEATER

Starting on March 16, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present the visually striking drama “Birds of Passage”, an epic exploration of the clash between tradition and the pursuit of wealth, embodied in one family’s confrontation with the outside world.

From the Oscar®-nominated team behind the genre-defying “Embrace of the Serpent” comes an equally audacious saga centered on the Wayúu indigenous people during a crucial period in recent Colombian history. Torn between his desire to become a powerful man and his duty to uphold his culture's values, Rapayet (José Acosta) enters the drug trafficking business in the 1970s and finds quick success despite his tribe's matriarch Ursula's (Carmiña Martínez) disapproval. Ignoring ancient omens, Rapayet and his family get caught up in a conflict where honor is the highest currency and debts are paid with blood. [2019, Colombia, 125 minutes, in Wayúu and Spanish with English subtitles, Not Rated].

David Fear of “Rolling Stone” describes the film as, “Stunning, sumptuous…part anthropological study, part rise-and-fall epic and all-out mesmerizing.” Peter Debruge of “Variety.com” singles out the conflict at the center of the story, “Few films have captured quite so powerfully the tension between the old and new worlds — a feat ‘Birds of Passage’ accomplishes while simultaneously allowing audiences to channel the Wayúu’s surrealistic view of their surroundings, where spirits walk the earth, and wise women interpret their dreams.”

Screening times are 8:00 pm on Saturday (Mar 16), 2:00 pm on Sunday (Mar 17), 2:00 pm on Monday (Mar 18), 3:15 pm on Wednesday (Mar 20) and 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm on Thursday (Mar 21). Admission is $8 for members and $11 for future members. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater, starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
