CARMEN (BIZET) presented by the Rehoboth Beach Film Society

February 9th, 2019 - 12:30 pm

RBFS presents CARMEN (BIZET)
Feb. 9 at 12:30 pm; Feb. 11 at 1 pm; and Feb. 12 at 6 pm

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is proud to present the Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD broadcast of Georges Bizet’s “Carmen” on Saturday, February 9 at 12:30 PM; Monday, February 11 at 1:00 PM and Tuesday, February 12 at 6:00 PM. Please note that screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater and will be shown as a recorded presentation after being filmed live.

Mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine reprises her remarkable portrayal of opera’s ultimate seductress, a triumph in her 2017 debut performances, with impassioned tenor Roberto Alagna as her lover, Don José. Louis Langrée conducts Sir Richard Eyre’s powerful production, a Met favorite since its 2009 premiere.

Bizet’s masterpiece of the gypsy seductress who lives by her own rules has had an impact far beyond the opera house. The opera’s melodic sweep is as irresistible as the title character herself, a force of nature who has become a defining female cultural figure. “Carmen” was a scandal at its premiere but soon after became a triumphal success and has remained one of the most frequently staged operas in the world.

[Sung in French with English subtitles, Runtime approximately 3 hours, 21 minutes, including one intermission.]

In addition to the opera performance, the HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or various production crew members while showing behind-the-scene workings. This production is the seventh in The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD series for the 2018–19 season.

Admission for The Met: Live in HD broadcasts is $25 for adults; $22 for RBFS members, Met members, and seniors (65+); $15 for students (with ID) and children (12 and under). Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater 30 minutes before the screening.
