Coastal Concerts presents Red Priest Wild Card Concert

April 29th, 2017 - 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

As its second “wild card” offering, Coastal Concerts welcomes Red Priest, the one-of-a-kind early music group that had to cancel a 2015 appearance because of a family emergency. Named after the famous scarlet-haired composer-violinist-cleric Antonio Vivaldi and often sporting extravagant costumes and engaging in theatrical high jinx, this British early music foursome is committed to defying expectations.

They inject a fresh sense of fun and playful imagination into their interpretations of repertoire too often performed in a so-called historically correct but stodgy manner. “If the Rolling Stones played recorder, violin, cello and harpsichord and their genre was 17th century music, they would be the band called Red Priest” (Pittsburgh Post Gazette). “An electrified audience shouted and cheered” (The Washington Post). “Deliciously twisted, vividly interpreted and played with dash and precision” (Los Angeles Times).

The ensemble’s founder, world renowned recorder virtuoso Piers Adams, argues that taking liberties with Baroque repertoire is not violating its spirit but enlivening and recapturing it. If the audience can set aside what they may have come to expect from most early music concerts, they will be in for a real treat from these superb musicians who perform with exuberance, humor and entertaining stagecraft.
