EMILY THE CRIMINAL
FEATURING DELAWARE’S OWN, LEADING ACTRESS AUBREY PLAZA
Opening August 26, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater presents Emily the Criminal, a taut crime thriller by Director/Writer John Paton Ford (Rothchild, Patrol) in his feature debut about a woman swept up in a life of crime.
Emily (Aubrey Plaza) is saddled with student debt and locked out of the job market due to a minor criminal record. Desperate for income, she takes a shady gig as a “dummy shopper,” buying goods with stolen credit cards supplied by a handsome and charismatic middle man named Youcef (Theo Rossi). Faced with a series of dead-end job interviews, Emily soon finds herself seduced by the quick cash and illicit thrills of black-market capitalism, and increasingly interested in her mentor Youcef. Together, they hatch a plan to take their business to the next level in Los Angeles. [2022, USA, 96 min, R: R]
Rex Reed of Observer writes, “It’s energizing to see something as keenly observed and uniquely competent as Emily the Criminal. It’s a tense and engaging thriller that looks and feels distinctively different.” Shawn Edwards of Fox 4 Kansas City exclaims, “Aubrey Plaza is amazing… one of the best performances and best movies of the year.”
