THE EXCEPTION Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

July 14th, 2017 - 4:00 pm
THE EXCEPTION OPENING AT THE CINEMA ART THEATER

Starting on July 14th the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present THE EXCEPTION, a World War II thriller of desire and intrigue, with a bravura turn by Christopher Plummer as Kaiser Wilhelm II.

As the German army rampages across Holland, there is fear among Nazi authorities that the Dutch resistance might target the Kaiser for assassination. German soldier Stefan Brandt (Jai Courtney) is sent to mind the exiled monarch, forced after World War I to live out his days in a secluded mansion in The Netherlands. Brandt finds himself drawn into an unexpected and passionate romance with Mieke (Lily James), one of the Kaiser's maids, and a woman of murky loyalties. When Heinrich Himmler (Eddie Marsan), head of the SS, decides to come for an unexpected visit with a large platoon of Nazis in tow, the manse is soon overcrowded with sub-rosa competing agendas, leading to a finale in which Brandt is forced to make the ultimate choice between honoring his country and following his heart. [2016, USA/UK, Runtime: 1 hour, 47 minutes, Rated: R]

Peter Debarge of “Variety” recognizes director David Leveaux, a long-time London theater director making his film debut, for his handling of the cast, particularly Plummer, from whom he “coaxes a masterful performance”, and compares the film to former Best Picture winner THE KING’S SPEECH. A.O. Scott of “The New York Times” marks the film as a throwback, “the kind of suspenseful, romantic melodrama of awakened conscience that might have been made in Hollywood or Britain in the early years of the war”.

Screening times are 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm on Friday (July 14), 4:00 pm on Saturday - Monday (July 15-17), 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm on Tuesday (July 18), 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm on Wednesday (July 19), and 7:00 pm on Thursday (July 20).
