FIRE AT SEA opening at the RBFS Cinema Art Theater

January 20th, 2017 - 4:00 pm
FIRE AT SEA opening at the Cinema Art Theater

Starting on January 20 the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present FIRE AT SEA, a powerful portrait of the small Sicilian island of Lampedusa.

The first documentary to ever win the top award (the Golden Bear) at the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival, FIRE AT SEA takes place in Lampedusa, a once peaceful Mediterranean island that has become a major entry point for African refugees into Europe. Situated 150 miles south of Sicily, Lampedusa is where we meet Samuele, a 12-year-old boy who lives simply, climbing rocks by the shore and playing with his slingshot. Yet nearby we also witness thousands of men, women and children trying to survive the crossing from Africa in boats that are too small for such a journey. Filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi masterfully places these realities side by side, and in so doing creates a remarkable third narrative that jolts us into a new understanding of what is really happening in the Mediterranean today. [2016, Italy/France, Runtime: 114 minutes. No Rating]

Kenneth Turan of the “Los Angeles Times” affirms that “What FIRE AT SEA appears to be and what it is are not the same thing, and it’s that difference that makes it a masterful documentary.”

Screening times are 4:00 pm on Friday (January 20), 7:00 pm on Saturday (January 21), 3:00 pm on Sunday (January 22), 4:00 pm on Wednesday (January 25) and 1:00 pm on Thursday, (January 26). Tickets can be purchased at the Cinema Art Theater, starting 30 minutes prior to each screening. Admission for a screening is $8 for RBFS members and $10 for future members. All screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater located at 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza, behind the Lewes Wawa.
