Fireside Forum: An Introduction to Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter
Join us for the first of three Fireside Forums with Cruce Stark, now retired and a Professor Emeritus, who for many years taught American literature and creative writing at the University of Delaware.
Too often “classics” – works that have endured because they connect with our most intense inner experiences – have become so associated with “assigned readings” that students have difficulty making contact. This series of presentations will attempt to convince students – in perhaps a fresh way – that rather than being a “dusty classic,” the narrative on some level is about their own lives. Far from being merely presentations of the hypocrisy of Puritan society, these works examine how personal insecurities undermine our chances of finding fulfilling relationships.
