Fort Miles Historical Association Film and Lecture Series: The Assault on Iwo Jima

December 27th, 2017 - 1:45 pm
Fort Miles Historical Association Film and Lecture Series

The 3rd, 4th and 5th Marine Divisions attacked the small island of Iwo Jima in February 1945, 73 years ago. Their battle was to take no more than three days but lasted more than a month with over 6800 US Marines killed and over 20,000 Japanese soldiers. It was the first American attack on Japanese soil; the great American sacrifice and the fanatical Japanese defense did much to determine months later the dropping of the two atomic bombs.
