Free Arbor Day Tree Seminar

April 10th, 2018 - 10:00 am to April 27th, 2018 - 11:30 am
The City of Lewes is celebrating Arbor Day on Friday April 27th in Lewes with a FREE seminar on the do’s and don’ts for trees.  The tree talk will be given by Dr. Neil Hendrickson of Bartlett Tree Research Lab and Mark Shaw, Arborist at Bartlett Tree Experts Friday April 27th at 10:00 a.m. in the City Meeting Room at the Margaret H. Rollins Community Center.  If you have questions such as  what kind of tree should I plant in my yard, what is that stuff on my tree, when and how should I trim my tree, why does my tree look dead, or any other tree related issue, then you should come to this tree talk.

Alison Kirk, Parks & Marina Administrator and Chair of the Parks and Recreation Commission for the City of Lewes said “Both Dr. Hendrickson and Mark Shaw have worked with us on various tree issues and also led a tree workshop for our volunteers.  The commission found the workshop very insightful, interesting, and entertaining and we are excited to offer the seminar to the public.”

After the seminar, volunteers from the Parks & Recreation Commission will plant a native flowering dogwood tree, in Stango Park.  Members from the public are encouraged to join in the tree planting after learning tips and tricks from the seminar.

This year also marks the 17th year in a row that the City of Lewes has been named Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.  The city achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree board commissioner, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.  Over 900 City trees have been inventoried and each have a bronze numbered tag on them.  A person can learn more about a particular tree such as its species, age, and health just by entering the tag number into the ArborScope program. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
