GOING ALL THE WAY Opening at the Cinema Art Theater in Lewes
Opening December 30, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater presents Going All the Way, an emotional drama originally released in 1997. This newly re-edited and restored version completely upends the original cut, skews closer to the source novel, and cements the film as one of the most aesthetically fresh and thematically fascinating films of the 90s, as well as a testament to the ever-evolving possibilities of cinematic rediscovery.
Mark Pelllngton’s adaptation of Dan Wakefield’s seminal novel about a young man coming of age in the 1950s is a timeless story of freedom and repression, friendship and family, sex and love, and the psychological and spiritual struggle to be true to one’s self even if it means going against society’s expectations. In his debut as a feature filmmaker, Pellington constructs an elegant and morally complex tale about two young high school alumni Sonny (Jeremy Davies) and Gunner (Ben Affleck) who are also Korean war veterans returning to their sheltered Indianapolis community, only to find they no longer fit in. Theirs is an emotionally fraught journey—especially for Sonny, who struggles with self-doubt and thoughts of suicide—but one leavened by moments of humor, uplift, and self-discovery. The film also stars among others Jill Clayburgh, Lesley Ann Warren, Rachel Weisz and Rose McGowan. [2022, US, 103 min, Rating: R]
Leo Brady of www.AMovieGuy.com says, “Going All the Way is worthy of a visit from those who may need to give it a second chance or those who need to discover a true hidden gem.” Jim Laczkowski of Director’s Club pens, “Pellington deserves praise for going back to the past, making Going All the Way the film it was meant to be. It's a lovely tale of friendship, a warm time capsule showcasing two strong performances that becomes more than just another "coming home" story.”
