Food Drive at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market

This Saturday November 10, and next Saturday November 17, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market will conduct a food drive for the benefit of Casa San Francisco located in Milton, DE.

Casa San Francisco offers an emergency shelter providing housing and three daily meals for up to 12 adults for a maximum of 30 days, a food cooperative helping families and individuals stretch their limited incomes by providing a supplemental bag of groceries once every month, and an Emergency Food Pantry stocked with donated food for persons who are in crisis and cannot buy food.

The Market continues to "glean" (gather together donated food from our vendors) to give to Casa San Francisco and customers can help with this. At these last two markets, customers can purchase something fresh from a vendor and bring it to the HLFM table at the market to donate to the food bank. And these are the specific non-perishable items that folks can bring to the market. The food bank has requested: spaghetti sauce, pasta, peanut butter, jams and jellies, canned fruits/vegetables/soups, boxed cereal, powdered or shelf stable milk, rice, and beans. Please honor the HLFM’s mission and the health needs of folk who use the food bank by providing healthy foods. These items may also be brought to the HLFM Table at the Market.

The Fall Market is located at the Richard Shields Elementary School parking lot at the corner of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive in Lewes, Delaware, and is open Saturdays from 9 am till noon through November 17 (Saturday before Thanksgiving).

This Saturday, farmers/producers will be offering all the bounties of a fall harvest: Brussel sprouts, carrots, sweet potatoes, garlic, collard greens, peppers, white and orange cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, beets, winter squashes, lettuces, apples, artisanal cheeses, mushrooms, oysters, cider, lamb, pork, jams and jellies, milk, yogurt, baked goods and fresh cut flowers for the table.

The Market continues to process SNAP (EBT Food Stamps). To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM will match up to $20 with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to go to the SNAP Information tent at the Market to redeem the Bonus Bucks incentive.

Consistent with its mission, the Board of Directors of the HLFM is committed to supporting farmers and emerging farmers who grow local fruits, vegetables and produce –a “real” farmers market.
