Historic Lewes Farmers Market

October 3rd, 2020 - 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Historic Lewes Farmers Market
Shields Elementary School Parking Lot

This Saturday, October 3, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market begins its fall market hours--9am to noon and moves for the rest of the fall season to the Richard Shields Elementary School parking lot, just off the corner of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive in Lewes, Delaware so that the area the Market occupies at Smith Park for the summer can be reseeded.

The Market continues its fall season at Shields with 24 vendors through November 21 (Saturday before Thanksgiving). Your favorite market vendors will be there offering all the bounties of fall harvest: Brussel sprouts, carrots, peppers, lettuces, broccoli, cabbage, kales, sweet potatoes, ginger, winter squashes (including pumpkins), apples, cider, mushrooms, chicken, pork, freshly laid eggs, breads, jams and jellies, pastries, honey and flower bouquets.

There is just one more opportunity to enter the raffle at the market--a chance to win the Fabu-Lewes Feast--eight $125 gift certificates from the best restaurants in the area. Tickets are just $5 each or 6 for $25. The drawing for the Fabu-Lewes Feast is this Saturday, October 3 at 11:30 at the Market. Proceeds from the raffle benefit the HLFM, the non-profit that manages the markets. The raffle tent is located near the Market entrance. One does not have to be present to win.

The HLFM continues its partnership with Epworth United Methodist Church Food Pantry. HLFM customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk, and other food from growers at the Market to donate to the Epworth program every Saturday. At the end of the Market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to Epworth. The HLFM thanks its customers for their generosity.

To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program and matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the Market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the Market.  In addition to SNAP, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market welcomes participants in Delaware's Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. WIC coupons can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the Market. Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) coupons are also welcome.

If you are able, it is best to either walk or bike to the market. Lewes School, its parking lot, and its playing fields are entirely fenced off, so there is no parking in the Lewes School parking lot. The Market thanks Beebe Hospital for allowing customers to park in the outdoor Beebe lot in back of the Hospital. Customers can enter that parking area through the main entrance to the Hospital between Rite Aid and the Hospital. If you park at Beebe, please walk to Savannah Road, turn right, and Sussex Drive is two blocks away. Turn right at Sussex Drive and you will see the Market.

Customers who want to know what is happening at the Market each Saturday should subscribe to the HLFM newsletter sent to customers on Thursdays. Newsletter is free. To be included, customers may send their email address to [email protected].

Consistent with its mission, the HLFM is committed to supporting farmers who grow local fruits and vegetables -- a “real” farmers market that is producer only.
