Lewes Lunch & Learn

March 10th, 2017 - 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

The Lewes Historical Society’s Lewes Lunch and Learn program on March 10th, features Dr. Carol Pollio with "Unsung Heroes & Heroines of the USLSS"

During the next Lewes Lunch & Learn program, on Friday, March 10th, at noon in Hotel Rodney, Dr. Carol Pollio will present "Unsung Heroes & Heroines of the USLSS".

The history of the US Life Saving Service is filled with tales of heroism and bravery.  Yet few people are aware of the role women and minorities played in this incredible organization.  Join Dr. Carol Pollio as she explores the contributions of these unsung heroes and heroines of the USLSS - their sacrifices, honors, and achievements, as true heroes of the American coast.

Dr. Carol A. Pollio recently retired from her position as Chief Scientist of the National Park Service (NPS) National Capital Region in Washington, DC.  She also honorably served 31 years in the US Coast Guard Reserve, achieving the rank of CAPT/06.  A published author in environmental conflict resolution, Dr. Pollio also has had more than 20 years experience as a university Professor, teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and directing an Environmental Science BS/MS Program.  She was fortunate during her time in the NPS to participate in weekly historic reenactments of the USLSS Beach Apparatus Drill (in period military attire), while stationed at Gateway National Recreation Area-Sandy Hook Unit in New Jersey.  She lives in Prime Hook Beach (Milford, DE), where she continues to explore her diverse interests in natural science, culture and history.

The Lewes Historical Society hosts a Lewes Lunch & Learn series, which includes various topics relating to the history of Lewes and surrounding area.  This series is led by local history buffs, heritage area experts, and museum professionals. Lectures will take place on announced dates, beginning at noon in the downstairs meeting room of the Hotel Rodney at the corner of Second and Market Streets, Lewes, Delaware.  These events are free and open to the public.  Space is limited.  Seating is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.  It is suggested that attendees bring a brown bag lunch to enjoy during the lecture.

These programs are sponsored by Hotel Rodney.
