Lightship Overfalls SUMMER PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN

August 21st, 2019 - 10:00 am to 12:00 pm

FINAL SUMMER PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN

Wednesday August 21

The mission of the Overfalls Foundation is to collect, preserve and teach the maritime history of the Delmarva region.

The Foundation is excited to announce the final summer program for children from 6-12 years of age, and their parents, will be held Wednesday August 21 from 10-noon at the Lightship Overfalls on the canal in Lewes.

Attendees will have an intimate opportunity to explore the Lightship Overfalls and learn more about the history of lightships and the life and challenges of the sailors who served aboard them. Lightships and their crews played a vital role in the safety and success of marine travel and commerce over the past 2 centuries.

This summer’s program will feature the language of signal flags. There will be games and fun while learning how the sailors used this “Flag Alphabet” to communicate with other vessels that might be nearby. A highlight will be a special craft using the flags to create a wooden plaque to take home. Parents as well as their children are invited to participate. The hope is that these classes will stimulate further interest in learning more about our region’s history and the value of preserving this story for the future.

The cost of these workshops is $5 per participant . Each student must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, or to register, call Marcos at 302-645-7670 ext 202 or use the "Contact Us" button (click here) on our website.

Staff volunteers are needed for 2 hour shifts 8:30-10:30 and 10:30-12:30. Volunteers should call 302-379-0072.
