THE METROPOLITAN OPERA: LIVE IN HD “TURANDOT” Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is proud to present the Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD broadcast of Giacomo Puccini’s “Turandot” on Sat, Oct 19 at 12:30 pm; Mon, Oct 21 at 1 pm, and Tue, Oct 22 at 6 PM. Please note that screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater and will be shown as a recorded presentation after being filmed live.

Turandot, Puccini’s final opera and one of the biggest blockbusters in the repertoire, transports us to a fantasy of ancient China. There the regal, forbidding Princess Turandot poses three riddles to each prince who wishes to win her — but anyone who fails to answer correctly is executed. Prince Calaf does answer correctly, and he declares that he’s willing to die if Turandot finds out his name by dawn. The plot unfolds to music of extraordinary brilliance, including “Nessun dorma,” the most popular of all Italian tenor arias!

Two of opera’s most thrilling dramatic sopranos, Christine Goerke and Nina Stemme, reprise their fierce portrayals of the title princess. Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the podium to conduct Franco Zeffirelli’s dazzling production of Puccini’s final masterpiece, which also features tenors Roberto Aronica and Marco Berti as Calàf, sopranos Eleonora Buratto and Hibla Gerzmava as Liù, and bass-baritone James Morris as Timur.

[Sung in Italian with English, German, and Spanish subtitles. Run time approximately 3 hours, 2 minutes, including two intermissions.]

In addition to the opera performance, the Live in HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or various production crew members while showing behind-the-scene workings. This production is the first in The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD series for the 2019–20 season.

Admission for The Met: Live in HD broadcasts is $25 for adults; $22 for RBFS members, Met members, and seniors (65+); $15 for students (with ID) and children (12 and under). Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater 30 minutes before the screening.
