Metropolitan Opera Live in HD's AGRIPINNA (Handel)

March 7th, 2020 - 12:00 pm

Metropolitan Opera Live in HD's AGRIPINNA (Handel)
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is proud to present the Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD broadcast of Handel’s witty tale of political ambition “Agrippina” on Saturday, March 7 at 12 pm and Monday, March 9 at 12:30 pm. Please note that screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater and will be shown as a recorded presentation after being filmed live.

Handel’s tale of intrigue and impropriety in ancient Rome receives its first Met performances, with star mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato as the controlling, power-hungry empress Agrippina and Harry Bicket conducting. Sir David McVicar’s production ingeniously reframes the action of this black comedy about the abuse of power to “the present,” where it should loudly resonate. The all-star cast features mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey as Agrippina’s son and future emperor Nerone, soprano Brenda Rae as the seductive Poppea, countertenor Iestyn Davies as the ambitious officer Ottone, and bass Matthew Rose as the weary emperor Claudius.

[Sung in Italian with English subtitles. Run time approximately 3 hours, 35 minutes, including one intermission.]

In addition to the opera performance, the Live in HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or various production crew members while showing behind-the-scene workings. This production is the seventh in The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD series for the 2019 -20 season.

Admission for The Met: Live in HD broadcasts is $25 for adults; $22 for RBFS members, Met members, and seniors (65+); $15 for students (with ID) and children (12 and under).
