MILES DAVIS: BIRTH OF THE COOL Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

Starting on September 27, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present “Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool,” a superbly crafted musical documentary that taps deep into the mystique of Miles Davis: his sound, stardom, and cult of personality.

A horn player, bandleader, innovator, Miles was a singular force of nature, the very embodiment of cool. The central theme of his life, and of this film is Davis' restless determination to break boundaries and live life on his own terms. This film explores archival photos and home movies shot by Miles and his colleagues, his manuscripts, and original paintings. Featuring interviews with some of the most well-known musicians on the planet, including Jimmy Cobb, Lee Konitz, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Carlos Santana, The Roots, and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers; the film explores why Miles continues to be a relevant voice in today's world. [US, 2019, 115 minutes, Rating: NR].

Glenn Whipp of “Los Angeles Times” exclaims, “You'll want to listen to Miles' music after watching the film and, when you do, you might feel it a little deeper.” Adrian Mack of “Georgia Straight” remarks, “Few 20th century artists lived more completely in the process, and Stanley Nelson's film, brimming with fabulous footage, doesn't fail to impart that crucial aspect of the story.”

Screening times are 4 pm and 7 pm on Fri (Sep 27), 7 pm on Sat (Sep 28), 3 pm on Sun (Sep 29), 2 pm on Mon (Sep 30), 4 pm on Wed (Oct 2), 4 pm on Thu (Oct 3). Admission is $8 for members and $11 for future members. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
