National Theatre Live: HEDDA GABLER @ RBFS Cinema Art Theater

April 24th, 2017 - 1:00 pm
“I’ve no talent for life.”

Just married. Bored already. Hedda longs to be free...

Hedda and Tesman have just returned from their honeymoon and the relationship is already in trouble. Trapped but determined, Hedda tries to control those around her, only to see her own world unravel.

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society announces the next play in the exciting series of National Theatre Live screenings. National Theatre Live is a groundbreaking project that presents the best of British theater live from the London stage on film to cinemas across the UK and around the world.

Tony Award-winning director Ivo van Hove, one of the world’s most exciting directors, returns to National Theatre Live screens with a modern adaptation of Ibsen’s classic masterpiece, “Hedda Gabler”. Ruth Wilson plays the title role in an invigorating version by Patrick Marber. She superbly conveys the desolation of Ibsen’s ahead-of-her-time aesthete. This new production is ravishingly, chillingly atmospheric.

Railing against a life of crippling convention, Hedda Gabler cuts through the lives of everyone in her orbit. Hedda and Tesman have just returned from their honeymoon and the relationship is already in trouble as Hedda longs to be free. Trapped but determined, she tries to control those around her, only to see her own world unravel. This production is executed with style, beauty, power and raw emotion. It roots the character in a modern world where there are still plenty of women trapped in meaningless marriages, at the mercy of men. What makes this a must-see is Wilson's ability to make this woman a victim while also imbuing her with a demonic spirit, a madness and a desire to destroy. She is captivating as Hedda and makes the character a chilling anti-hero.

“Daily Telegraph” states, “One of the best productions of the year.” “WhatsOnStage” gives the
production 5 stars and says, “A Hedda unlike any I have ever seen. Devastating.” (Runtime 2 hrs. 45 min. including an intermission).

Screenings will be on Monday, April 24th at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, April 26th at 7:00 pm and Saturday, April 29th at 1:00 pm at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza (behind the Lewes Wawa).
