PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

Starting on March 13, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” a French romantic drama that follows the slow-burning romance between a portraitist and the aristocrat she has been selected to paint.

In 18th century France a young artist, Marianne, is commissioned to paint the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. Because Héloïse is a reluctant bride-to-be, Marianne arrives under the guise of companionship, observing Héloïse by day and secretly painting her by firelight at night. As the two women orbit one another, intimacy and attraction grow as they share Héloïse’s last moments of freedom before the impending wedding. Héloïse's portrait soon becomes a collaborative act of and testament to their love. Winner of a coveted Cannes prize (2019) and one of the best reviewed films of the year, “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” solidifies Céline Sciamma as one of the most exciting filmmakers working in the world today. [2020, France, 120 min, Rated: R, in French with English subtitles].

Christy Lemire of “Breakfast All Day” exclaims, “It is one of the most gorgeous films you will ever see in your life. Every single frame of it is like a picture that you want to hang in your home and it is just devastatingly romantic and sad and sexy and beautiful.” Moira MacDonald of “The Seattle Times” says, “You've never seen another movie quite like this. In its quiet gaze, love becomes art.”

Screening times are 3 pm and 6 pm on Fri (Mar 13), 3 pm and 6 pm on Sat (Mar 14), 3:45 pm on Sun (Mar 15), 2 pm on Mon (Mar 16), 6 pm on Tue (Mar 17), 2 pm on Wed (Mar 18) and 3 pm and 6 pm on Thu (Mar 19).
