RBFS Cinema & the Arts Series: "Art Bastard"

January 17th, 2017 - 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm
The Cinema & the Arts film series proudly presents a screening of the documentary ART BASTARD on  Tuesday, January 17, 7:00 pm, at Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza, (behind the Lewes WAWA). This event brings art and artists to the big screen and is co-sponsored by the Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the Rehoboth Art League. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

In a culture obsessed with money and fame, how does an outsider with his own singular style thrive? ART BASTARD is the rousing tale of a fiercely independent rebel who never fit into today’s art world yet has become one of its most provocative characters. Known as the anti-Andy Warhol, Cenedella’s vast eye-popping canvases explore the chaotic beauty of history and humanity with a sarcastic wit – drawing admirers from all walks of life. What Art Bastard shows, in stunning cinematic detail, are the living, breathing, story-telling canvases that Cenedella has created for six decades. In a fast moving series of riveting interviews with family members, art critics, and museum power brokers the director reveals Cenedella’s personal journey showcasing an art career that has defied all the rules. An official selection at numerous film festivals around the country, ART BASTARD won the Best Documentary Award at the Manchester Film Festival, a Best Documentary at the Idyllwild International Film Festival, and a Focus on Art Award at the Orlando Film Festival. Sheila O’Malley of RogertEbert.com says of ART BASTARD: “The works (Cenedella’s) are so large, so rich with imagery, that they are very difficult (impossible, really) to take in at one glance.  The magnifying-glass approach (of the filmmaker) helps illuminate the sheer amount of information in any given painting…He is in a long tradition of social satirists, caricaturists, absurdists and cartoonists.” [2016, USA, Runtime 82 minutes, NR]

Local artist Lee Wayne Mills will facilitate a post film discussion. Mr. Mills served as the Interim Executive Director of the Rehoboth Art League from 2007-2008 and worked as the Gallery Manager there from 2000 – 2003. His award winning mixed-media works in collage and assemblage have been exhibited in galleries from Texas to Massachusetts as well as here in Maryland and Delaware.
Admission for this event is $9.00. Tickets can be purchased online at www.rehobothfilm.com or by calling 302-645-9095 ext.1. Please note that tickets are non-refundable. Any available tickets will be sold at the door.
