RBFS present National Theatre Live's AMADEUS

February 20th, 2017 - 7:00 pm
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society announces the next play in the exciting series of National Theatre Live screenings. National Theatre Live is a groundbreaking project that presents the best of British theater live from the London stage on film to cinemas across the UK and around the world.

Music. Power. Jealousy. “Amadeus” is Peter Shaffer’s iconic play from the National Theatre, with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia. This twenty-piece orchestra plays live on-stage throughout the play and is fully integrated into the action, bringing Mozart’s music to life. This production is a lush, high-voltage theatrical spectacle.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a rowdy young prodigy, arrives in Vienna, the music capital of the world – and he’s determined to make a splash. Awestruck by his genius, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy his name. Seized by obsessive jealousy he begins a war with Mozart, with music, and ultimately, with God. After winning multiple Olivier and Tony Awards when it premiered at the National Theatre in 1979, “Amadeus” was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film.

“Amadeus” is a stunning piece of theater with two rich central roles. Lucian Msamati is an excellent Salieri. He makes it clear that his attack on Mozart is an extension of his war with a God by whom he feels personally betrayed. He beats himself in anguish, not least because he is the sole person in Vienna capable of appreciating Mozart’s genius. Adam Gillen perfectly captures Mozart’s whinny, foul-mouthed giddiness and the belief in his own gifts. The opulent production works superbly because it places the human drama in the seething context of a music-dominated society.

“Time Out” states, “Epic. Wonderful. A stupendous revival.” The “Evening Standard” gives the production 5 stars and says, “A soaring song of genius and jealousy.” (Runtime 3 hrs. 30 min, including an intermission).

Screenings will be on Monday, February 20th at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, February 22nd at 7:00 pm and Saturday, February 25th at 1:00 pm at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza (behind the Lewes Wawa). Admission for National Theatre Live is $18 for RBFS members and $20 general admission. Online reservations (www.rehobothfilm.com) are encouraged and may be made with MasterCard or VISA.
