RBFS presents Metropolitan Opera Live in HD ~ Donizetti’s L’ELISIR D’AMORE

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is proud to present the Metropolitan Opera’s live broadcast of Gaetano Donizetti’s bewitching comedy L’ELISIR D’AMORE on Monday, February 19 at 1:00 PM and Tuesday, February 20 at 6:30 PM. Please note that screenings are now being held at the Cinema Art Theater and will be shown as a recorded presentation one week after being filmed live. Audience members will allowed to eat and drink concessions sold onsite in the Theater. They will also appreciate the wonderful sound quality, as well as the comfortable seats.

The Met: Live in HD season continues with Bartlett Sher’s production of Gaetano Donizetti’s opera, L’ELISIR D’AMORE. Sher’s staging is charming, with deft comedic timing, but also emotionally revealing. Pretty Yende debuts a new role at the Met with her first Adina opposite Matthew Polenzani as Nemorino. Domingo Hindoyan conducts.

L’ELISIR D’AMORE has been among the most consistently popular operatic comedies for almost two centuries. The story deftly combines comic archetypes with a degree of genuine character development rare in works of this type. Its ending is as much a foregone conclusion as it would be in a romantic comedy film today – the joy is in the journey. Donizetti created one of his most instantly appealing scores for this ride. The opera is set in a small village in rural Italy in 1836, when the Risorgimento, the movement for Italian independence, was beginning to gather momentum.

[Sung in Italian, with English subtitles. Runtime: 2 hours, 39 minutes, with one intermission].

In addition to the opera performance, the HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or various production crew members while showing behind-the-scene workings. This production is the fifth in The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD series of 10 dates of live simulcast transmissions for 2017–18.

Admission for The Met: Live in HD broadcasts is $25 for adults, $22 for RBFS members, Met members, and seniors (65+); $15 for students (with ID), and children (12 and under). Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Online reservations may be made with MasterCard or VISA. Admission will be available at the door for any unsold seats.
