RBFS presents Metropolitan Opera Live in HD ~ Massenet’s CENDRILLON

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is proud to present the Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD broadcast of Jules Massenet’s CENDRILLON on Saturday, May 5 at 12:30 PM and Monday, May 7 at 12:30 PM. Please note that screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater and will be shown as a recorded presentation one week after being filmed live.

Now, for the first time ever, Massenet’s sumptuous take on the Cinderella story comes to the Met, with Joyce DiDonato starring in the title role. She is paired with mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of Prince Charming, Kathleen Kim as the Fairy Godmother, and Stephanie Blythe as the imperious Madame de la Haltière. Bertrand de Billy conducts Laurent Pelly’s imaginative storybook production.

“Glorious,” raved “The New York Times” when DiDonato sang the title role of Cendrillon at the Royal Opera in 2011. “Her performance was thoroughly enchanting.”

Charles Perrault’s 1698 fairy tale, the classic telling of the Cinderella story, is an excellent source for an opera—providing color, romance, and relatable themes for audiences of all ages. The work includes many moments in which Massenet is at his best and most widely accessible, from the pageantry and glowing musical nostalgia for the French baroque in the court scenes to the otherworldliness of the love music to the wit and humor that permeate the work as a whole.

[Sung in French, with English subtitles. Runtime: approx. 2 hrs, 47 mins, including one intermission].

In addition to the opera performance, the HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or various production crew members while showing behind-the-scene workings. This production is the tenth in The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD series for the 2017–18 season.

Admission for The Met: Live in HD broadcasts is $25 for adults, $22 for RBFS members, Met members, and seniors (65+); $15 for students (with ID), and children (12 and under). Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater, 30 minutes before the screening.
