David Leveaux’s new production of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead marks the 50th anniversary of the play that made young Tom Stoppard a name overnight. Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Joshua McGuire (The Hour) star in this brilliantly funny situation comedy from The Old Vic theatre in London. Against the backdrop of Hamlet, two hapless minor characters, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, take center stage. The two are childhood friends of Prince Hamlet and the play concerns their misadventures and musings. As the young double act stumble their way in and out of the action of Shakespeare’s iconic drama, they become increasingly out of their depth as their version of the story unfolds.
This brilliantly crafted production has a great deal of fun with it all. The leads make a good team: Radcliffe as the dimmer, more light-hearted Rosencrantz, McGuire the intellectually pompous and agitated Guildenstern; one bearded and dark-eyed, the other curly-haired with a toothy grin. Together, they handle the intricate dialogue with aplomb, allowing the jokes to fizz and the anxiety to register.
The Guardian states, “Tom Stoppard’s comedy shines brightly.” And Daily Telegraph says, “Daniel Radcliffe and Joshua McGuire are a delightful double act.” (Runtime 3 hr., including an intermission).
