RBFS presents NERUDA at the Cinema Art Theater

March 3rd, 2017 - 4:00 pm
NERUDA opening at the Cinema Art Theater

Starting on March 3, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present NERUDA, an inventive and entertaining biographical drama.

Beloved Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco) is also the most famous communist in post-WWII Chile. When the political tides shift, he is forced underground, with a perseverant police inspector (Gael García Bernal) hot on his trail. Meanwhile, in Europe, the legend of the poet hounded by the policeman grows, and artists led by Pablo Picasso clamor for Neruda’s freedom. Neruda, however, sees the struggle with his police inspector nemesis as an opportunity to reinvent himself. He cunningly plays with the inspector, leaving clues designed to make their game of cat-and-mouse ever more perilous. In this story of a persecuted poet and his obsessive adversary, Neruda recognizes his own heroic possibilities: a chance to become a symbol for liberty, as well as a literary legend. [2016, Chile/Argentina/France/Spain, Runtime: 107 min, Rated: R]

Randy Cordova of the “Arizona Republic” praises NERUDA as “a sumptuous puzzle of a movie that takes a turbulent period in the life of the Chilean poet and politician and turns it into a fable about fame and the power of words.” The Nobel Prize in Literature 1971 was awarded to Pablo Neruda “for a poetry that with the action of an elemental force brings alive a continent’s destiny and dreams.”

Screening times are 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm on Friday and Saturday (March 3-4), 3:30 pm on Sunday (March 5), and 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm on Wednesday and Thursday (March 8-9). Tickets can be purchased at the Cinema Art Theater, starting 30 minutes prior to each screening. Admission for a screening is $8 for RBFS members and $10 for future members. All screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater located at 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza, behind the Lewes Wawa.
