RBFS presents "Obsession"

June 13th, 2017 - 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society announces the next play in the exciting series of National Theatre Live screenings. National Theatre Live is a groundbreaking project that presents the best of British theater live from the London stage on film to cinemas across the UK and around the world.

Jude Law (“The Young Pope”, “The Talented Mr. Ripley”) stars in the superb stage production of OBSESSION, from the Barbican Theatre in London. Ivo van Hove (NT Live: “A View from the Bridge”, “Hedda Gabler”) directs this new stage adaptation of Luchino Visconti’s 1943 film. This is a dark, psychological tale, examining the relationship of a couple, the power of seduction and how far they will go to be with each other.

Gino is a charmer and a drifter, down-at-heel and magnetically handsome. At a road side restaurant he encounters husband and wife, Joseph and Hanna. Irresistibly attracted to each other, Gino and Hanna begin a fiery affair and plot to murder her husband, Joseph.  But, in this chilling tale of passion and destruction, the crime only serves to tear them apart. The true obsession at the heart of the play is not Gino and Hanna’s desire for each other, but for their sense of place or lack thereof. Gino is at home in the freedom of being anywhere and nowhere and feels trapped by small-town life. Hanna, whose marriage had at least given her a sense of stability, is scared to abandon that comfort for an uncertain future on the road. Both struggle between their consuming want for each other and their differing natures, and the play’s real tension is in this push and pull.

Van Hove works with anticipation as he coaxes articulate, physical performances from his leads. The staging is beautiful and visually stunning. The set design includes huge video projections which provide a cinematic atmosphere.

“The Guardian” states, “A stylish stage version of Luchino Visconti’s film.” and “Daily Telegraph” says, “Jude Law smoulders.” (Rated: R, runtime 2 hr. No intermission).

Screenings will be on Monday, June 12th at 1:00 pm and Tuesday, June 13th at 7:00 pm at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza (behind the Lewes Wawa). Admission for National Theatre Live is $18 for RBFS members, $20 general admission and $15 for ages 16 and under. Online reservations (www.rehobothfilm.com) are encouraged and may be made with MasterCard or VISA.
