RBFS Women's Film Series presents GRANNY'S GOT GAME

February 28th, 2017 - 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is pleased to collaborate with the League of Women Voters® of Sussex County to present the second annual Women’s Film Series. The focus of this monthly series is to inform, inspire, and empower audiences by exploring a range of women’s issues through the art of film.

The series continues on Tuesday, February 28 at 7:00 pm with a screening of the heartwarming documentary, GRANNY’S GOT GAME. GRANNY’S GOT GAME follows a senior women’s basketball team as they battle for a spot in the National Senior Games. These fiercely competitive grandmas in their seventies battle physical limitations and social stigma to change perceptions about aging. Raised in a world when there were no opportunities for women to compete after high school, they must learn a new style of play while overcoming the skepticism of their peers. Interspersed with archival footage from the 50s and 60s, this uplifting tale is about more than just basketball. It’s about overcoming life’s obstacles to do what you love with the people you care most about. The filmmaker, Angela Alford says, “I have spent the last year and half with these women, documenting their journeys, and even doing a little coaching. The experience has changed me and I hope the film will inspire you."  [2013 USA, Runtime: 74 minutes, NR]

A post film discussion will be led by Sharon Hansen. Ms Hansen played recreational basketball during the 50s when athletic opportunities for women were limited. She went onto college earning a B.A. from Beaver College (now Arcadia University) and an M.A. and PhD. from the University of Maryland – where she served on the faculty in their School of Medicine for 12 years. Always competitive and sports minded, Ms. Hansen also played Fast Pitch Softball. She was inducted into the Greater Washington Fastpitch Hall of Fame in 1990 and in the Maryland Fastpitch Hall in 1997.

Admission is $9.00 per screening. Tickets can be purchased online at www.rehobothfilm.com or by calling 645-9095. Doors open at 6:30 pm.
