THE SOUVENIR Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

THE SOUVENIR Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

Starting on June 14, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present “The Souvenir,” an alluring drama about a young woman’s dangerous attraction to a self-destructive man, which threatens her artistic ambitions.

A shy but ambitious film student (Honor Swinton Byrne) begins to find her voice as an artist while navigating a turbulent courtship with a charismatic but untrustworthy man (Tom Burke). She defies her protective mother (Tilda Swinton) and concerned friends as she slips deeper and deeper into an intense, emotionally fraught relationship that comes dangerously close to destroying her dreams.

From acclaimed writer-director Joanna Hogg comes an enigmatic and personal portrait of the artist as a young woman, combining passionate emotions and exquisite aesthetics into a lush, dreamlike story of young adulthood and first love. At once enrapturing and mysteriously unsettling—and featuring a profoundly layered breakout performance by Honor Swinton Byrne—“The Souvenir” is an essential and enduring film from one of our most distinctive and exciting filmmakers. [2019, UK, 101 minutes, Rated: PG-13].

“Another small, quietly devastating drama by Hogg, and perhaps the most ambitious and personal of her four films,” writes G. Allen Johnson of “The San Francisco Chronicle.” “An intensely personal document. But its themes of young love, growth of identity, and education make this a story that's easy to access, and simple to slip inside,” adds Chris Knight of “The National Post.”

Screening times are 4 pm and 7 pm on Friday (June 14), 4 pm and 7 pm on Saturday (June 15), 4 pm on Sunday (June 16), 4 pm and 7 pm on Wednesday (June 19), 4 pm and 7 pm on Thursday (June 20). Admission is $8 for members and $11 for future members. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
