TONI MORRISON: THE PIECES I AM Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

Starting on July 19, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am.” This artful and intimate documentary is a meditation on legendary storyteller Toni Morrison as she examines her life, her works, and the powerful themes confronted throughout her literary career.

From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to ‘70s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature. Inspired to write because no one took a “little black girl” seriously, Morrison reflects on her lifelong deconstruction of the master narrative. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works, including novels “The Bluest Eye,” “Sula” and “Song of Solomon,” her role as an editor of iconic African-American literature, and her time teaching at Princeton University. [US, 2019, 119 minutes, Rating: R].

Gary Goldstein of “Los Angeles Times” takes special note, “Moving and profound. Look for this to be front and center come Oscar® time.” Monica Castillo of “RogerEbert.com” says “Morrison's legacy is more than just the titles on a reading list, and this documentary will likely help many viewers see just how monumental her accomplishments remain.”

Screening times are 4 pm on Friday (July 19), 7 pm on Saturday (July 20), 3 pm on Sunday (July 21), 4 pm on Wednesday (July 24), 7 pm on Thursday (July 25). Admission is $8 for members and $11 for future members. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
