THE TWO POPES Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

Starting on Dec 13, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present “The Two Popes,” a comedy-drama that takes place behind Vatican walls where two Popes, one conservative and one liberal, must find common ground to forge a new path for the Catholic Church.

Frustrated with the direction of the church, Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) requests permission to retire in 2012 from Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins). Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Behind Vatican walls, a struggle commences between both tradition and progress, guilt and forgiveness, as these two very different men confront their pasts in order to find common ground and forge a future for a billion followers around the world. [US, 2019, English, 125 minutes, Rating: PG-13].

Brian Tallerico of “RogerEbert.com” describes it, “A smart, empathetic film about the need for both resilience and uncertainty in a faithful heart.” Chris Fell of “The Film Experience” writes, “This duet of performances finds both actors providing some of their best work in quite some time, each with a rich well of emotional intelligence towards their characters and their scene partner.”

Screening times are 4 pm and 7 pm on Fri (Dec 13), 7 pm on Sat (Dec 14), 2 pm on Sun (Dec 15), 2 pm on Mon (Dec 16) and 4 pm on Wed (Dec 18). Admission is $8 for members and $11 for future members. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
