THE WEDDING PLAN Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

June 9th, 2017 - 4:00 pm
Starting on June 9th the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present THE WEDDING PLAN, an emotionally complex comedy about a woman’s desperate plan to find happiness in marriage—while still in search of a groom.

At 32, Michal (Noa Kooler), an Orthodox Jewish woman, is finally looking forward to the comfort and security of marriage when she is blindsided by her fiancé's decision to call off the wedding with only a month's notice. Unwilling to return to lonely single life, Michal decides to put her trust in fate and continue with her wedding plans, believing Mr. Right will appear by her chosen date. Confident she will find a match made in heaven, she books a venue, sends out invitations and buys a wedding dress, as her skeptical mother and sister look on with trepidation. During Michal's month-long search for a spouse, she enlists the help of two different matchmakers, goes on a series of disastrous blind dates and finds an unexpected connection with a charming but utterly unsuitable pop star (Oz Zehavi) - all the while dismissing pleas by concerned friends and family members that she reconsider her risky plan. [2016, Israel, Runtime: 110 minutes, Rated: PG]

Ben Kenigsberg of “The New York Times” calls the film “special” and made it a “NYT Critic’s Pick” for its refusal to “settle, as the Hollywood version of this story might have, for offering a cavalcade of comically wrong men. It holds out a few different prospects for Michal and keeps her (and us) guessing until the end.” J. Hoberman of “Tablet” likens the film to Joseph Cedar’s NORMAN, noting that they are part of “a small cycle of current films that, in their archetypal characters and homespun sense of the miraculous, have the feel of Jewish fables.” Directed by the Orthodox Israeli director Rama Burshtein (FILL THE VOID), THE WEDDING PLAN offers viewers a unique exemplar of indomitable faith in a world not often portrayed on screen.

Screening times are 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm on Friday and Saturday (June 9-10), 4:00 pm on Sunday (June 11), and 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm on Wednesday and Thursday (June 14-15). Tickets can be purchased at the Cinema Art Theater, starting 30 minutes prior to each screening. Admission for a screening is $8 for RBFS members and $10 for future members. All screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater located at 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza, behind the Lewes Wawa.
