The 4th annual Lewes Barkfest Yappy Hour will take place on Friday, February 13 from 5 - 7 pm at Irish Eyes in Lewes on their enclosed, heated porch. This fun event is advertised as a “Yappy Hour” for Pets and People who like to “Yap!” The event is part of a promotion to encourage people to come to Lewes for the weekend nearest to Valentine’s Day to shop for gifts for their special valentines and to celebrate by dining at the many Lewes eating establishments on both sides of the canal bridge. Numerous retail businesses and restaurants will be offering Valentine-themed specials including discounts on specific items.
This event was conceived by P.U.P.S. of Lewes owner Lesley Bowers to augment activities that were taking place on the weekend closest to Valentine’s Day including a Pet Pageant staged on Saturday. Since the Pet Pageant was staged outdoors, it fell victim to Mother Nature’s bad weather three out of the past five years and it was decided to not include it anymore in conjunction with Valentine’s Day activities. It is hoped that it will be incorporated into another event when nicer weather is probable.
The Yappy Hour includes the opportunity for pets and their owners to feast on delicious food and refreshing libations such as Bark-tini, Cat-atonic, Mutt-ini. There will be a 50-50 raffle with the proceeds benefiting the Delaware SPCA in Georgetown. P.U.P.S of Lewes owner Lesley Bowers donates pet-centric gift baskets for another raffle drawing that also benefits the SPCA. Canine Cabin donates dog treats to the canines on the porch and Irish Eyes donates 10% of their total food sales for the entire day to the SPCA.
During the event, the SPCA will be hosting a “Fill the Van” for people to donate blankets, sheets , pet food, kitty litter, toys, dog bones and bleach for cleaning their kennels. Attendees to Yappy Hour can come with or without their pets and dogs should be on a leash with one dog and one handler.
