Lewes Lights Announces New Holiday Lights Event

Registration for homeowners and businesses closes Nov 27!

Lewes, DE— Nov.19, 2020 — With so many cancelled Christmas events, on top of the challenges locals faced in 2020, Christian Mullins and Debra Evalds decided to organize a positive event to lift spirits this holiday season. Thus, Lewes Lights; Making Spirits Bright, was born. Mullins, a PT Lewes resident who works in The DC hospitality industry, devised the concept, “With a background in hospitality and a love of Christmas, I was certain a new tradition for Lewes could warm what was otherwise a difficult year. Lewes Lights is a great way to illuminate the charm of the City of Lewes.” He enlisted Debra Evalds, a local resident, to co-chair the month-long event that runs from December 4-31, as Evalds is also an organizer of Go Fourth Lewes fireworks and has helped with other local initiatives and events. According to Evalds, “My husband Paul and I adore Christmas, and volunteer as Santa & Mrs. Claus locally. We are also small-business owners and understand the economic hardships faced by businesses this year. I saw this is a great way to spread jolliness and be merry, while bringing people into the City of Lewes to support our struggling merchants and restaurants”.

The idea is simple. Lewes homeowners and businesses will decorate and light up their properties nightly from dusk to 9:00. Those that register at www.LewesLights.org by 11/27 @ 5:00 will have their addresses pinpointed on an interactive map on the website, which spectators will use to drive through Lewes to see the lights at their pace. Spectators will be viewing from their cars and organizers are promoting full COVID-19 mandate compliance. Social distancing and masks are required in downtown Lewes.

Registration, Awards, and More
Lewes homeowners and businesses are asked to register at www.LewesLights.org  to put their address on the interactive map. For privacy, homeowner names will not be listed. City of Lewes registered homeowners can compete for awards. Homeowners can also opt-out of competing and just be listed as exhibitors. Due to the huge size of the 19958 zip code, Lewes Lights is focusing on the City of Lewes this year. This is a goodwill, grassroots effort being led and funded by a few volunteers, so coordinating, monitoring, buying signs, and assigning judging beyond the City of Lewes isn’t feasible, financially or physically, in this initial year. Registered homeowners outside the City of Lewes can mail [email protected] with their address, photos, and a brief description of their light display. We will feature especially festive homes outside the City of Lewes on our social media accounts, if photos are submitted.

There are awards in 5 varied categories, from simple colonial candles and wreaths to over the top “Clark Griswold” style décor with lights and figures, plus a “Fun& Frosty” kid’s choice home and jolliest street award. Truly, everyone should feel welcome to sign up, whether they just string a few lights on their porch, spotlight a beautiful wreath on the door, or cover their house with lights and mire. The goal is to see lights shining all around Lewes and bring joy in a year that has had little to celebrate, and every pinpoint on the tour map represents a point of light.  Lewes Lights organizers hope visitors will come in town to shop and dine, or grab take-out, while enjoying this free event. These additional lighted homes and businesses will complement the lovely lights and decorations that the City of Lewes and Lewes in Bloom hang every year. All are invited to come on down and feel the glow!
