Trails

Lewes is the destination for visitors who are active and want to spend time outdoors while on vacation. The network of walking and biking trails continues to expand including a myriad of trails in Cape Henlopen State Park and the ten-year old Junction and Breakwater Trail, linking Lewes to Rehoboth and offering a quiet and scenically beautiful alternative to Coastal Highway.

In the spring of 2014, the State of Delaware opened its new Gordons Pond Trail in Cape Henlopen State Park. With its 2,000-foot elevated bridge over the marsh offering views of the ocean, and winding through the pine forest, the trail attracts many thousands of walkers and cyclists.  Many of the cyclists ride the entire loop, which joins the two attractive beach towns af Lewes on the north end and Rehoboth Beach to the south.  The entire loop encompasses 16 miles of trails including the Junction and Breakwater Trail (west of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal) and the Gordons Pond Trail through Cape Henlopen State Park.  The Lewes/Rehoboth Rotary Club publishes an annual guide called Great Walks and Trails in Sussex County. The guide provides maps and descriptions of most of the trails in the Lewes area and is available at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce's visitor center at 120 Kings Highway, next to the Zwaanendael Museum.
