Visit the Cannonball House Maritime Museum at 118 Front Street in Lewes for children's story time, engaging learning opportunities, and history-themed crafts, all scheduled in two sessions: a morning session from 10:00am-11:00am and an afternoon session from 1:00pm-2:00pm. These programs are free for children and only a suggested donation of $5 per adult.
Space is limited; call for reservations (302) 645-7670. The Lewes Historical Society is offering programs geared for kids Kindergarten through 2nd grade, while school is out on March 3rd.
The program on Friday, March 3rd is titled, “Fun with Feathers”. Featured will be the book Johnny Long Legs: A Story of Big Birds, by Susan Tate. The story tells of a Blue Heron who meets a surprising friend. It will be read aloud by living history character Mrs. Susan Roland King, a former resident of the Cannonball House. After the story, children will have the chance to, learn the bird calls of knowledge local water fowl, make up their own bird dance, and create their own feathered bird mask.
The Cannonball House Maritime Museum is significant to Lewes’s history, bearing a scar of a cannonball from the War of 1812 when the British bombarded the town in retaliation for citizens not providing supplies to troops off shore. Now open as a museum, the galleries display a history of the Pilots’ Association, shipwrecks along the coast, the rise and fall of the Cape Henlopen lighthouse, and the City’s menhaden fishing past.
