CAPERNAUM Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

February 15th, 2019 - 3:00 pm

CAPERNAUM OPENING AT THE CINEMA ART THEATER

Starting on February 15, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present the Oscar®-nominee for Best Foreign Language Film and the winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival “Capernaum” (“Chaos”), about the journey of a brave 12-year old boy who survives the dangers of the city streets by his wits.

Zain flees his negligent parents and finds himself homeless at a young age. He must overcome challenging issues on a daily basis just to feed himself and survive life on the street. “Capernaum” was made with a cast of non-professionals playing characters whose lives closely parallel their own. While steeped in the quiet routines of ordinary people, the film has an expansive palette: without warning it can ignite with emotional intensity, surprise with unexpected tenderness, and inspire with flashes of poetic imagery. “Capernaum” is ultimately a hopeful film that stirs the heart as deeply as it cries out for action. [2018, Lebanon/France/US, in Arabic and Amharic with English subtitles, 123 minutes, Rated: R].

A.O. Scott of “The New York Times” calls “Capernaum,” “a fairy tale and an opera, a potboiler and a news bulletin, a howl of protest and an anthem of resistance.” Peter Howell in his four-star review in “The Toronto Star” compares Zain to “a latter-day Oliver Twist,” and calls the filmmaking “bravura” and “compassionate”.

Screening times are 3:00 pm on Friday (Feb 15), 6:00 pm on Saturday (Feb 16), 3:00 pm on Sunday (Feb 17), 2:00 pm Monday (Feb 18) and 3:00 pm on Thursday (Feb 21). Admission is $8 for members and $11 for future members. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater, starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
