THE CAVE Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

January 17th, 2020 - 3:00 pm

THE CAVE Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

Starting on January 17, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present the Oscar® nomination for Best Documentary Feature, “The Cave,” a powerful war story that follows a dedicated team of female doctors who tirelessly treat casualties in an underground medical facility.

Director Feras Fayyad (“Last Men in Aleppo”) delivers an unflinching story of his native home Ghouta and the Syrian war. For besieged civilians, hope and safety lie underground inside the subterranean hospital known as the Cave. Here pediatrician and managing physician Dr. Amani Ballour and her colleagues Samaher and Dr. Alaa have claimed their right to work as equals alongside their male counterparts, doing their jobs in a way that would be unthinkable in the oppressively patriarchal culture that exists above. Following the women as they contend with daily bombardments, systematic sexism, chronic supply shortages and the ever-present threat of chemical attacks, “The Cave” paints a stirring portrait of courage, resilience and female solidarity. [US, 2019, Arabic with English subtitles, 95 minutes, Rating: PG-13].

Ann Hornaday of “Washington Post” remarks, “This extraordinary film allows viewers to bear witness to courage and dedication in their finest forms - and it offers a grim reminder that justice, mercy and healing have been driven underground for centuries.” Nikki Baughan of “Screen International” exclaims, “The work is relentless, their bravery inspirational and the scale of inhumanity never less than breathtaking.”

Screening times are 3 pm and 6 pm on Fri (Jan 17), 6 pm on Sat (Jan 18), 2 pm on Sun (Jan 19), 2 pm on Wed (Jan 22) and 3 pm on Thu (Jan 23). Admission is $8 for members and $11 for future members. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening.
