Historic Lewes Farmers Market

July 28th, 2018 - 8:00 am to 12:00 pm
Kid’s Day at the Market and
Meet Food Columnist Denise Clemons
Historic Lewes Farmers Market
Saturday, July 28, 2018, 8 am - noon
George H. P. Smith Park, Johnson and Dupont Avenues

Due to last week’s move to Shields Parking lot because of the wet weather, the Market rescheduled Kid’s Day to this Saturday, July 28. It all starts with a tree planting (tree donated by the HLFM). More fun follows with Story Time, bocce instruction, a scavenger hunt with prizes, and healthy snacks for kids.

At 9 am, Jennifer Noonan, the Children’s Librarian at the Lewes Public Library, will read Pancake, Pancakes by Eric Carle. Just under 8,900 children and their adults have come to Children’s Story Time at the Market since this partnership program between the HLFM and the Lewes Public Library began in 2008.

Then, at 10:00 am, Cape Gazette food columnist, Denise Clemons, will demonstrate how to make a quinoa salad using fresh ingredients from the Market. Denise’s presentations are always informative and fun. Denise Clemons is the author of “Cape Flavors” a weekly food column appearing each Friday in the Cape Gazette newspaper. Her book, A Culinary History of Southern Delaware was published by the American Palate imprint of the History Press in 2016. In addition to serving on several non-profit Boards, Denise conducts cooking demonstrations and nutrition workshops throughout the Cape region.

The HLFM Wednesday Outdoor Market at Crooked Hammock Brewery is also open every Wednesday from 8 to 11 am with an expanded number of vendors. The Market is located at Crooked Hammock Way and Kings Highway in Lewes.

The Market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the Market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the Market. For Kid’s Day the Market will give each child with a parent showing an EBT card, $5 in Bonus Bucks to spend at the Market to purchase fruits and vegetables of their choice.

WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) coupons are also accepted at both the Saturday and Wednesday markets.

The Market is open every Saturday from 8 am to noon. Ample parking can be found at the Shields Elementary School and Lewes School Parking lots (intersection of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive), a short walk to the Market. The Market provides a Veggie Valet service to help customers carry bags and melons (when they are in season) back to their cars. This service is located right outside the HLFM Information Tent.

The Market is open rain or shine, but, if it is raining, the Market moves to Shields Elementary School Parking Lot (Savannah Road and Sussex Drive).
