JOIN THE HISTORIC LEWES FARMERS MARKET

SATURDAY, September 1, 8 am—12 pm

Executive Chef/Owner Bill Clifton from The Counting House in the Brick Hotel in Georgetown, DE Demos at 10 am

It’s Labor Day Saturday at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market, and there’s lots going on at the Market. All the produce is freshly picked and oh-so-fresh with sweet corn, peaches, zucchini, squashes, green beans, lima beans, okra, garlic, watermelon, cantaloupe, arugula, lettuce mixes, cut mint, basil and other herbs at their peak. For the Labor Day cookout, there’s grass-fed hamburger, steaks, lamb, pork sausages and chops, and more. Just starting to appear at market are figs, Asian pears, apples, and plums. Customers should not forget the yogurt, milk, eggs, artisanal cheeses, honey, wheatgrass, breads, pastries, pies, quiches, jellies, jams, cut-flower bouquets and hand-made soaps and lotions.

At 10 am, Executive Chef Bill Clifton will demo a summer meal made with seasonal produce from the Market. Chef Clinton has recently opened his new restaurant, The Counting House, located inside the Brick Hotel on the historic Georgetown Circle. The restaurant uses locally-sourced ingredients, and they are committed to cooking sustainable menus showcasing regional ingredients.

At 11 am at the HLFM Info tent, friends of the market will pull the winning ticket for the official HLFM bicycle—a Jamis Earth Cruiser 2 in bright lime green. The bike also has a black basket that can easily be removed to use at the Market, and a bell that rings like an old ding-dong doorbell. Tickets for the raffle are free, and there is one more chance for market customers to enter before the 11am drawing. The beautiful cruiser was purchased locally at Seagreen Bicycle, 209 Monroe Avenue, Lewes, DE.

The Market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the Market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the Market.  In addition to SNAP, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market welcomes participants in Delaware's Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. WIC coupons can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the Market. Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) coupons are also welcome.

The Market is open every Saturday from 8 am to noon. There’s lots of parking at the Shields Elementary School and Lewes School Parking lots, just off the corner of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive and a short walk to the Market. At the Saturday market, a Veggie Valet service is provided to help customers carry bags back to their cars. This service is located right outside the HLFM Information Tent.

Customers who want to know what is happening at the Market each Saturday should subscribe to the HLFM newsletter sent to customers on Thursdays. Newsletter is free. To be included, customers may send their email address to [email protected].

Consistent with its mission, the HLFM is committed to supporting farmers who grow local fruits and vegetables -- a “real” farmers market that is producer-only.
