It’s Labor Day Saturday at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market and there’s lots going on at the Market. All the produce is freshly picked and oh-so-fresh with apples, Asian pears, fresh turmeric, sweet corn, squashes, green beans, eggplant, lima beans, okra, garlic, watermelon, cantaloupe, arugula, peppers, lettuce mixes, cut mint, basil and other herbs at their peak. For the Labor Day cookout, there’s grass-fed hamburger, steaks, lamb, chicken, pork sausages and chops, and more. Just starting to appear at market are Asian pears, apples, and plums. Customers should not forget the yogurt, milk, butter, ice cream, eggs, , honey, wheatgrass, breads, pastries, pies, quiches, jellies, jams, cut-flower bouquets and hand-made soaps and lotions.

At 10 am, Executive Chef Matt Kern from Heirloom in Lewes will demo a summer meal made with seasonal produce from the Market. Chef Kern uses locally-sourced ingredients and is committed to cooking sustainable menus showcasing regional ingredients. Chef Kern is a a James Beard Award semifinalist.

At 11 am at the HLFM Info tent, Lewes Mayor Ted Becker will pull the winning ticket for the official HLFM bicycle—an eggplant purple Jamis Earth Cruiser 2. The bike also has a black basket that can easily be removed to use at the Market, and a bell that rings like an old ding-dong doorbell. Tickets for the raffle are free, and there is one more chance for market customers to enter before the 11am drawing. The beautiful cruiser was purchased locally at Seagreen Bicycle, 209 Monroe Avenue, Lewes, DE.

Parking for the market is at Shields and Lewes School parking lots. just off the corner of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive.

The Market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the Market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the Market. WIC and SFMNP coupons are also accepted at the Market.

The Market is open every Saturday from 8 am to noon. Customers are urged to park at the Lewes and Shields School parking lots, just off the corner of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive —a short walk from the Market. This is the best place to park to go to the Market. The Market provides a Veggie Valet service to help customers carry bags and melons back to their cars. This service is located at the HLFM Information Tent.

In case of inclement weather, the Market moves to Shields Elementary School Parking lot.
