Historic Lewes Farmers Market

May 27th, 2017 - 8:00 am to 12:00 pm

Memorial Day Saturday at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market

On Saturday, May 27th at 9 am, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market will celebrate Memorial Day at the Market with flags, demos, and some very special guests of the Market.

It’s summer, and the grilling is easy! At 10 am Chef Ian Crandall of Kindle will demonstrate how to prepare and grill a Reid Angus beef paillard with a chimichurri sauce made with Black Hog Farmstead herbs and garlic.

Maureen Miller, children’s librarian from the Lewes Public Library is retiring from the library and, sad to say, this will be the last day she will be reading at the Children’s Story Time at the Market. Maureen started this joint venture between the HLFM and Lewes Public Library in 2008. Over the last 9 years, she has spent her summer Saturdays presenting 123 programs at the Market for over 8,200 children and their parents. She doesn’t just read a book out loud—she makes it come alive! In addition, she’s done dozens of activities with kids at the market like planting seeds and making those pipe-cleaner bees. This week, she will read a favorite book, Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert at the Story Time tent at the market near the playground. The market asks all to come to Story Time this Saturday at 9 am to help celebrate Maureen and all she has given to the Historic Lewes Farmers Market and the Lewes community. (The Story Time program will continue this summer with Hope Ellsworth reading.)

The Market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the Market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the Market. WIC will also be accepted at the market beginning June 3.

The Market is open every Saturday from 8 am to noon. Ample parking can be found at the Shields Elementary School and Lewes School Parking lots (intersection of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive), a short walk to the Market. The Market provides a Veggie Valet service to help customers carry bags and melons (when they are in season) back to their cars. This service is located right outside the HLFM Information Tent.

In case of inclement weather the Market moves to Shields Elementary School Parking lot.
