Historic Lewes Farmers Market

July 29th, 2017 - 8:00 am to 12:00 pm
On Saturday, July 29, at 8 am, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market rings the bell to open at George H. P. Smith Park. 35 vendors are at market selling watermelons, cantaloupes, hot peppers, tomatoes, sweet corn, peaches, cucumbers, potatoes, kale, carrots, squash, beef-pork-lamb, artisanal cheeses, baked goods, local honey, freshly-cut flowers, and chicken and duck eggs.

At 9 am, Jennifer Noonan, Children's Librarian from the Lewes Public Library, will read Up, Down and Around by Katherine Ayers.  All children and their adults are welcome to come to Children’s Story Time, a partnership program between the HLFM and the Lewes Public Library. The Story Time Tent is located near the children’s playground at the park.

Meet two of the Market’s farmers this Saturday.

At 10:00 am - Eileen Dykes of Twin Post Farm. From their 260-acre farm, Eileen (the Egg Lady) and her husband Ned bring eggs to the Market from their free-range chickens and ducks fed all-natural grain with no antibiotics. Eileen will speak about their journey from a farm life dictated by contracts with the commercial chicken industry to raising free-range chicken and duck eggs. She will also share information about her chickens and ducks that provide the colorful and plentiful eggs she brings to market every week.

Then at 10:30 am, Travis Reid of Reid Angus Farm in Frankford, DE will talk about how he raises his cattle which are 100% grass-fed on Sudangrass known for its high-caliber nutritional content and natural weed-deterrent qualities (eliminating the need for caustic chemicals on our fields). Finally, the herd is finished on grain for the final 5-6 months, including wheat, barley, corn, and even brewer's’ grain from some of the top local microbrews.

The Market continues its annual tradition of a free Annual Bike Raffle. This year, the bike the Market is giving away is a Sun Bicycles Revolutions Coaster Bike. This peach-colored beauty comes with white streamers and a basket. Tickets for the raffle are free, and the winner is drawn on Labor Day Weekend. To enter the contest, customers need to fill out a ticket at the HLFM Information Tent. One can enter every Saturday, so Market regulars have a better chance of winning. This beautiful cruiser was purchased at Seagreen Bicycle, a local bike shop at 209 Monroe Avenue, Lewes, DE.

Save the Date! Just one more week until Mater Madness at the Market.  To help celebrate National Farmers Market Week, on Saturday August 5th, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market will host its 11th Annual Tomato Festival. HLFM vendors will have an extraordinary array of delicious local tomatoes just picked and ready for the table. There will also be face painting for children, guess the number of cherry tomatoes, and special tastings of tomato recipes prepared by the best chefs at the beach.
The Market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the Market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the Market.  In addition to SNAP, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market welcomes participants in Delaware's Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. WIC coupons can now be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the Market.

The Market is open every Saturday from 8 am to noon. There’s lots of parking at the Shields Elementary School and Lewes School Parking lots, just off the corner of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive and a short walk to the Market. For customers not able to walk that far, there is a drop-off and pick-up entrance in the circle in front of the Fred Thomas Building on Dupont Avenue next to the park.
At the Saturday market, a Veggie Valet service is provided to help customers carry bags back to their cars. This service is located right outside the HLFM Information Tent.

The HLFM’s Wednesday Outdoor Market at Crooked Hammock Brewery is now open from 8 am to 11 am with an expanded number of vendors. The Market is located at Crooked Hammock Way and Kings Highway in Lewes.
In case of inclement weather, the Market moves to Shields Elementary School Parking lot at Savannah Road and Sussex Drive.
