RBFS presents I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO

March 29th, 2017 - 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm
Starting on March 29, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO, an astonishing documentary.

In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, “Remember This House”. The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends—Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin’s death in 1987, he left behind only thirty completed pages of his manuscript.

Now, in his incendiary new documentary, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words and a flood of rich archival material. I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO is a journey into black history that connects the past of the civil rights movement to the present of #BlackLivesMatter. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And, ultimately, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for. (2017, France/USA, Runtime: 93 min., Rated: PG-13)

Bruce Demara of the “Toronto Star” states “The result – hard hitting and insightful – is a reminder that the more things change, the more they stay the same.” The film was deemed Best Documentary by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and it took home the people’s choice award from the Toronto International Film Festival. It also won a creative recognition award from the International Documentary Association and was one of the final five Oscar® nominated films for Best Documentary.

Screening times are 1:00 pm on Wednesday and Thursday (March 29-30), 7:00 pm on Friday (March 31), 4:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday (April 1-2), 7:00 pm on Wednesday (April 5) and 4:00 pm on Thursday (April 6).
