THE ROSE MAKER Opening at the Cinema Art Theater
Starting on April 8, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present The Rose Maker, a colorful and touching comedy about growing new creations in mature soil.
Artisanal horticulturalist Eve Vernet (Catherine Frot) honors her father’s legacy by continuing the family business, breeding and growing unique roses that compete in showcases all over France. But Eve’s approach struggles to compete with the mass market production from her corporate rivals. With the business facing imminent bankruptcy or liquidation, Eve’s trusted secretary, Vera, makes a last-ditch effort to turn things around by hiring three new employees from a prison rehabilitation program behind Eve’s back. They are misunderstood outcasts with fresh ideas, strong work ethics, and absolutely no gardening skills. In a desperate attempt to save the business, the new team comes up with a perilous plan, and Eve unexpectedly discovers new parts of life that are worth nurturing. Paul Byrnes of the Sydney Morning Herald writes, “Cleverly structured as an allegory of French society, with characters who grow and develop (like roses).”
Screening times are 4 pm on Friday (Apr 8), 3 pm on Sat (Apr 9), 3:30 pm on Sun (Apr 10), 2 and 4:15 pm on Thu (Apr 13). Admission is $8 for members and $11 for future members.
