THE VICEROY’S HOUSE OPENING AT THE CINEMA ART THEATER

September 15th, 2017 - 4:00 pm
THE VICEROY’S HOUSE OPENING AT THE CINEMA ART THEATER

Starting on September 15th the Rehoboth Beach Film Society’s Cinema Art Theater will present THE VICEROY’S HOUSE, an historical drama about the 1947 partition of India.

New nations are rarely born in peace… India, 1947: Lord Mountbatten (Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville) is dispatched, along with his wife Edwina (Gillian Anderson), to New Delhi to oversee the country’s transition from British rule to independence. Taking his place in the resplendent mansion known as the Viceroy’s House, Mountbatten arrives hopeful for a peaceful transference of power. But ending centuries of colonial rule in a country divided by deep religious and cultural differences proves no easy undertaking, setting off a seismic struggle that threatens to tear India apart. [2017, UK, Runtime: 1 hour, 47 minutes, Rated: NR].

“A warm-hearted, ambitious period drama,” writes Ella Taylor of “NPR.org”. Ben Kenigsberg of “The New York Times” calls it, “never less than absorbing.” With sumptuous period detail, director Gurinder Chadha (BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM) brings to life a pivotal historical moment that re-shaped the world.
