National Train Day Celebration

May 11th, 2024 - 10:00 am to 2:00 pm

The Lewes Junction Railroad and Bridge Association (LJRBA) invites you to join us in celebrating the railroading history of Lewes on National Train Day, Saturday, May 11th.  The day will include various activities surrounding the historic Lewes Junction site, home of our beautifully restored 1917 caboose.

National Train Day commemorates the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869 when a final, golden spike was driven into the track at Promontory, Utah thereby fully connecting our country east to west.  We invite you to join us as we drive our own golden spike and open the restored Pennsylvania Railroad caboose for public viewing.

LJRBA’s program begins at 10:00 in the large conference room in the Lewes Public Library next to the railroad exhibit. In addition to driving the golden spike around 11:45, the day will feature historic railroad photos, and talks on LJRBA’s future plans, the history of Lewes Junction, the newly completed Replica Railroad Station, and the history of railroads in Eastern Sussex County.

Also, the Lewes Public Library will have displays of railroad themed books for children.  And the Lewes Historical Society in the Rollins Community Center, will offer free admission on the 11th.

We hope you will join in LJRBA’s celebration on May 11 from 10:00 to 2:00 p.m.
