THE METROPOLITAN OPERA: LIVE IN HD “PORGY & BESS” Opening at the Cinema Art Theater

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society is proud to present the Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD broadcast of The Gershwin’s modern American masterpiece “Porgy and Bess” on Tue, Feb 18 at 1 pm. Please note that screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater and will be shown as a recorded presentation after being filmed live.

Set in the 1930’s, this stylish production transports audiences to Catfish Row on the Charleston waterfront. “Porgy and Bess” centers on the tragic love story of the cripple beggar Porgy and beautiful Bess, who longs to turn away from her former life as a prostitute and cocaine addict. After a murder, Bess’ abusive partner Crown flees, leaving her at the mercy of a disapproving community and tempted by the seductive drug dealer Sporting Life. Bess strikes up an unlikely relationship with Porgy and gradually finds acceptance on Catfish Row - until a hurricane and the return of Crown change everyone’s lives forever.

David Robertson conducts a dynamic cast, featuring the sympathetic duo of Eric Owens and Angel Blue in the title roles and an all-star ensemble that includes Janai Brugger, Latonia Moore, Denyce Graves, Frederick Ballentine, Alfred Walker, and Donovan Singletary. [Sung in English. Director James Robinson’s stylish production transports audiences to a setting that is vibrant with music, dancing, emotion, and the heartbreak of its inhabitants.
